The West African region is undergoing a significant economic shift. After a turbulent few years that wiped billions off the region’s collective ledger, a steady, resilient recovery is officially underway across most nations.

According to the IMF Global Economic Outlook (April 2026), regional wealth climbed back to $833 billion to mark a vital turnaround from a devastating economic dip just two years ago. In 2022, regional GDP peaked at an impressive $938.19 billion, only to plummet to around $600 billion by 2024, largely driven by a significant contraction in Nigeria’s economy.

Despite suffering a 37% contraction, falling from $598.72 billion in 2020 to $377.36 billion in 2026, Nigeria remains the dominant economic powerhouse in the region.

Meanwhile, other economies are demonstrating strong growth momentum, with Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire surpassing the $100 billion threshold in 2026, reaching $118.29 billion and $112.12 billion in nominal GDP, respectively.

Collectively, these three economies account for approximately 70% of the region’s total GDP, underscoring their significant share of regional economic output. Senegal and Mali also made it to the top five, accounting for $40.47 billion and $33.85 billion, respectively.

Unburdened by the factors affecting larger markets, several smaller economies are resilient economic growth trajectories over the last six years.

Leading the charge is Guinea, which has seen its GDP skyrocket by 112.4% between 2020 and 2026. It is followed closely by Guinea-Bissau (96.0%), Cabo Verde (88.5%), and Liberia (85.8%). Togo also emerged as a standout reformer, almost doubling its economic output from $7.50 billion in 2020 to $13.44 billion in 2026, representing a 79.2% increase.

As the region moves further into 2026, the narrative is shifting. West Africa is no longer just a story of how its largest economy performs; rather, it’s becoming a story of a diversified, multi-speed recovery where the smallest players are punching well above their weight.
