The South Sudanese government has launched an investigation into Monday’s fatal plane crash involving a CityLink Aviation Ltd Cessna 208 Caravan (5Y-NOK) that went down about 20 kilometres from Juba International Airport, killing all 14 people on board. Authorities have suspended the airline pending the outcome of the probe.
In an earlier statement, the country’s aviation authority (SSCAA) said that “adverse weather conditions” and “low visibility” may have contributed to the crash.
The aircraft, carrying 13 passengers and one pilot, lost contact 28 minutes after taking off from Yei en route to Juba. According to officials, the victims included 12 South Sudanese nationals and two Kenyans.
Transport Minister Lt. Gen. Rizik Zakariah Hassan confirmed that the suspension of CityLink Aviation will remain in place until the investigation is concluded.
In a statement, the airline’s management said it was devastated by the tragedy while extending condolences to the bereaved families. It has pledged “full cooperation” with investigators.
