Following the devastating aftermath of the Ebola epidemic, Orange Sierra Leone (OSL) Foundation reflects on their impactful efforts in caring for 50 orphans affected by the disease. These children, embraced through the company’s goodwill and corporate philanthropy, have received ongoing support from the Orange Sierra Leone Foundation (OSLF) in partnership with SOS and the Ministry of Social Welfare.
As OSL Foundation’s humanitarian branch, their dedicated lead, Jestina Betts (photo), explains that the 50 orphans, some as young as six months old, were rescued by the company and placed under the care of SOS Children’s Village. The campuses in Makeni and Bo house 36% and 42% of the children, respectively, while the Freetown campus shelters the remaining 22%.
Providing for these children’s educational needs has been a top priority for Orange Foundation, said Jestina Betts. She affirms the Foundation’s commitment, stating that: “We ensure that they have access to quality schooling and learning opportunities. Additionally, we take care of their basic needs, such as food and medical care, until they reach the age of 18.”
Recognizing the critical importance of education, the company also invests in various aspects of the children’s educational development. This strategic approach aims to empower these children, fostering their potential to become knowledgeable and productive individuals who can contribute positively to national development.
Demonstrating their sincere concern for the orphans’ well-being, the OSL Foundation frequently conducts visits to gather firsthand information and ensure that the children are thriving. Moreover, the Foundation provides annual donations and hampers for the kids, showcasing the tangible impact that businesses and organisations can have during challenging times.
The ongoing dedication of OSL and OSLF symbolises the strength of corporate social responsibility and the enduring influence of long-term support in creating positive, lasting change. The OSL Foundation Director emphasises the significance of caring for the vulnerable, underscoring the value and responsibility that companies and communities hold in making a difference.
It is heartening to witness how OSL Foundation and SOS prioritise not only the immediate welfare needs of these children but also their transition into adulthood. This comprehensive support ensures that the orphans are equipped to tackle the challenges of this critical phase in their lives.
These personal visits from the OSL Foundation have a significant, positive impact on the children, fostering a sense of belonging and reminding them that they are part of a larger supportive community.
The humanitarian efforts displayed in this collaboration serve as a bright and inspiring example of corporate social responsibility and collective effort in making a profound difference in the lives of those in need.
Orange Foundation extends its deepest appreciation to SOS and their Country Director, Madam Sophie Ngong, for providing a safe and nurturing home for these resilient orphans.
