Court grants bail to the Ecobank manager prosecuted for fraud

By Dauda Koroma

The Ecobank manager and co-defendant charged with fraud last Thursday were both granted bail today. Idrissa Abdulai Kamara, branch manager at Ecobank MicroFinance, Makeni, and Saidu Sow are charged with 12 counts of conspiracy, fraud, forgery, uttering forged documents and fraudulent conversion, etc., contrary to the laws of Sierra Leone.

Because the case is still under preliminary investigation before the magistrate court, the defendants weren’t allowed to enter a plea.

The two men are accused of forging Ecobank fund transfer forms and using those forms to defraud B.S.B International about 585 million leones ($58,000).

Having heard the bail application submitted by the defendants’ counsel, H. Kamara, Magistrate Sahr Kekura then granted Le500m bail to each accused person. He also ordered them to provide sureties who must be ordinarily resident in Freetown and be gainfully employed by a reputable institution.

The case has been adjourned to June 2.
